Model project – school buildings in timber construction
Architectural competition - shortlist (4th place)
The school as an integrative learning and life preparation place is in a constant process of change and development. Openness, flexibility combined with resource-saving use of materials during construction underline this claim.
Our concept reacts to this with a sustainable and modular system that can be adapted in a flexible way to the different conditions of the respective building location. The task was to design buildings that were as innovative and exemplary as possible, taking into account aspects such as sustainability, ecology and modularity.
A resource-saving, standardized construction also combines economic advantages with a high degree of prefabrication, which means that significantly shorter construction times can be achieved. The basic modular system measuring 7.5m x 8.0m, which can also be divided into half a module, a third module or even smaller. With this system we can realize most of the desired spaces.
Highly insulated exterior walls with an optimized building shell reduce the energy requirement to a minimum. The building is heated with air-water heat pumps, which are supplemented by solar energy from photovoltaic systems.
Wood as a renewable building material combines both – economic and ecological aspects, which effectively contributes to reducing the carbon footprint. In addition to a very high degree of prefabrication, the compact building cubatures in connection with the proposed modular system also enable low production costs and considerable time savings in the planning and construction phase. The choice of material takes place under consideration of ecological aspects and under the premise of an economical, cost-effective and durable construction. Local suppliers are to be given preference if they are equally suitable as part of the overall ecological concept.
